Boston Globe Spotlight

SEGMENT 1:

Mark Erlich is the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the New England Carpenters Union a 25,000-member organization.  Mr. Erlick has been a member of the Carpenters Union since 1974, and has worked at his craft as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman, and superintendent. 

Azell Martin works at the Boston Housing Authority.  The Boston Housing Authority is the largest landlord in Boston and the largest public housing authority in New England. As such, the BHA houses approximately 10 percent of the city's residents through its programs.

And Diane Clark-Tucker is the BosCarp Coordinator.  

SEGMENT DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts is to deliver services and programs that aim to increase the economic self-reliance of African Americans and other people of color.  To that end they have partnered with the Boston Carpenters Apprenticeship & Training Fund, and employer partners, Archer Corporation, Component Assembly Systems, and Suffolk Construction, to create the BosCarp Program which will introduce students to the skilled trade of carpentry. Students will learn the basics of cutting, sizing and constructing wood or other substances for building, while obtaining industry certification.  The program is a12-week program that combines job readiness, and hands-on-experience training in the green construction trades

SEGMENT DESCRIPTION:

If you are interested in the BosCarp Program you must be 17+ years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, be in good physical condition, pass an interview, be of union jurisdiction and have a minimum of 8th grade reading and math skills.

Marcella Bombardieri is an investigative reporter with The Boston Globe's Spotlight Team.  She has been with the Globe since 1999, and was previously a higher education reporter.  Before that, Ms. Bombardieri worked as a general assignment reporter and a Metro features writer. She also has done reports from Afghanistan and Iraq.

SEGMENT DESCRIPTION:

The "Spotlight Team" is the Boston Globe's team of investigative reporters.  A few years ago the team won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the church sex abuse scandal in Massachusetts.  This time around the "Team" has launched a two-part investigative series that examines the Massachusetts Probation Department that has been plagued with allegations of patronage and corruption.

The series takes a comprehensive look at how the behavior in the Massachusetts Probation Department is affecting the budget, public safety, and justice in Massachusetts.
