WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A cell phone tower caught fire and collapsed to the ground Friday afternoon.
The 100-foot tower is located at 978 Worcester Street in Wellesley.
Fire officials said the fire was caused by some workers who were welding plates on the upper section of the tower.
"We had a company here doing some welding. They were putting some strengthening plates on the structure and for some reason it ignited the cables inside the cell tower and the resulting fire eventually collapsed the tower," said Capt. Jeffery Peterson, of the Wellesley Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
The next step is to remove the tower and put up a new one. Police said AT&T will be putting up a temporary tower to help with coverage in the area.
