Man charged with beating mom

PEMBROKE, Mass. -- A Massachusetts man has been charged with beating his mother with a pipe and slamming her head against a floor after he became angry because she asked him to shovel snow.

Barry Sylvester of Pembroke pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges of assault with intent to murder, aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery, resisting arrest and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The 38-year-old Sylvester had been free on $200 bail after his arrest last month for allegedly stealing a state truck. That bail was revoked and a judge ordered Sylvester held for a psychological evaluation.

Police say Sylvester beat his 57-year-old mother when he arrived home late Tuesday after a daylong snow storm. She called police, who caught Sylvester after a chase.
