City square to be dedicated to longtime Cheers bartender

BOSTON -- The city is saying ‘Cheers' to a former bartender.

The square near the Public Garden will be named for longtime Cheers bartender Eddie Doyle.

On Wednesday, the square will be officially dedicated to Doyle, who is the inspiration for the Sam Malone character in the 80s TV series ‘Cheers.'

Doyle poured drinks at Cheers and its predecessor "The Bull and Finch" for 35 years before he was laid off in March.

Since becoming unemployed, Doyle has appeared at charity events, and even tried his hand at writing a book.

After the ceremony, he plans to get a beer at Cheers.
