TAUNTON, Mass. -- A Taunton mother is demanding answers after her six-year-old son was told to walk home from school instead of waiting for his ride.

VaTon Carter usually takes the bus home or is picked up from the Lowell M. Maxham School, but on Monday when his mother and grandmother arrived at the school, VaTon was nowhere to be found.

"I didn't even know what to think. It was hard. I was upset because he wasn't there," said Anita Carter, the boy's mother.

Anita Carter and her mother Priscilla immediately jumped into their car to look for the boy.

VaTon had apparently set out in the wrong direction. He had walked almost a mile, when a woman walking her dogs came upon him.

"A woman was walking down the street with my grandson. Thank God we have good people in the world today that we'd never known, if she didn't bring him back we'd never had him," said Priscilla Carter.

7News spoke to the school principal but all official comments have been referred to the school superintendent, who has not been available for comment.

In all the commotion of finding her son, Anita Carter said she forgot to ask the woman her name, but said that she was very relieved that he was okay.
