Manhole cover hits car in Roxbury

BOSTON -- Two people are hurt after a manhole cover came loose and slammed into a car.

The accident happened on Monday afternoon in Roxbury.

According to officials, a 50-pound gate box cover slammed into the undercarriage of a vehicle traveling on Columbus Ave, causing the airbags to deploy.

"I thought it was a head-on collision or something," Steve Brigham, witness, said. "I looked out and the car was over here and the car was all messed up. Pieces everywhere from the manhole."

According to the Boston Water and Sewage Commission, there was a contractor working on the road Monday morning. Neighbors tell 7News that the cover was left in dangerous condition.

"I told them [that] there's a grate in the middle of the street, the frame popped off, and before another accident happens, like the other night, someone needs to come out here," Susan Day, reported problem with the grate, said. "It's two hours later, I come back and this is what happened."

The Boston Water and Sewage Commission says that the contractor was not from their organization.

Crews worked on repairing the gate box cover Monday afternoon.
