BOSTON -- Investigators are trying to figure out what caused an oil spill in the Charles River on Thursday.

Officials said the spill was about 300 feet long, creating sheen on the water between the Longfellow Bridge and the Old Charles River Dam. They are calling it a minor spill, with about five gallons of oil in the river.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, there is no effort to clean up the oil because it is evaporating faster that it would take to clean up. They said the spill was not a health threat.

It is still unknown where the oil came from.
