Boys & Girls Club warns of candy scam
BOSTON -- Officials with the Boston Boys & Girls Club are urging people not buy candy from youths claiming to be raising money for the organization.
The club has received multiple reports of teenagers selling candy outside Boston area stores recently.
Club spokeswoman Jan Goldstein says the organization does not raise funds in that manner.
Andrea Swain, director of the Yawkey Club in Roxbury, says teens selling candy outside a Mission Hill supermarket two weeks ago even had laminated information sheets bearing the name "Boys & Girls Club of America."
Somerville police say they arrested a teen last month for allegedly stealing an iPhone while selling candy in the name of the Boys & Girls Club.
Sales have also been reported in Harvard Square, Government Center and Brighton.
