Auction planned for Cape & Island license plates

BOSTON -- An auction is set to begin for motorists coveting a low numbered, Cape & Island license plate.

Online bidding starts Tuesday for the plates, with the minimum bid a cool $10,000 for plate numbers 1-10. Bidding begins at $1,000 for plate numbers 11-100 and $100 for plate numbers 101-999.

High bidders will be able to pick up their plates at Registry of Motor Vehicles branches in late August.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit several non-profit organizations on Cape Cod.
