Nuisance Type Mix

Posted by Chris Lambert

Watch any football today?  Winter weather was certainly the story across the country and for numerous games in the NFL.  The snow in Philly added up to 6-12" for a wide swatch southern Jersey, southeastern PA and Delaware.  That's the same system moving our way, but for us, we'll escape the wrath of the heaviest precipitation as just a bit of snow and ice move in.

A winter weather advisory goes in effect for many at 11PM tonight as light snow breaks out close to that time (early south, later north), and continues into the pre-dawn hours on Monday.  A coating to 2" of snow falls before some freezing light rain/freezing drizzle start mixing in inland, adding a glaze, and light rain takes over at the coast.  It's not a big storm, but with much of the morning commute spent with temps at or below 32 along and outside I-95/128, it'll be a slick one on untreated roads.   Good news is that the precip is slow and steady instead of a heavy onslaught during the commute, and that means the road crews should be able to get a good grip on the situation overnight and early tomorrow (at least for the main roads as driveways and secondary roads could be slick).  One exception here is there could be a steadier burst of snow in southern Bristol and southern Plymouth County around midnight that would slicken roads up quickly and for a couple hours.

We'll change to rain along the coast and in Boston by 8:00AM with a transition from freezing rain to plain ole' light rain inland between 10:00 AM-1:00 PM.  10:00 AM near 95, 1:00 PM for near 495 and outer Route 2 in northwestern Middlesex County and northern Worcester County.  Rain is light for the afternoon and tapers off for most by the evening commute.  Patchy freezing drizzle remains near outer Route 2 in the afternoon and early evening.

Tuesday is another close call with a wave of moisture sliding along a front just to our south.  It'll be close enough to give us plenty of clouds, and some light snow or snow showers.  It's possible that a burst of snow for several hours south of the Mass Pike could slide in mid-day. JR and Pete will have the update on this one Monday.

Stay tuned!

50/50 Weekend

Posted by Chris Lambert

We're off to an iffy start to the weekend as nuisance rain and wet snow moves across the area.  While it's not a well organized area of low pressure, it develops right near us midday, and that'll be enough for a tricky forecast.  Light to moderate  rain/snow is on and off early this morning with a heavier burst of precipitation possible late morning, through mid afternoon in eastern MA (11:00AM-3:00PM).

Final Days

Posted by Pete Bouchard

That's the way to get it done! Fine finish to the workweek as sun dominated and winds behaved.

I submit that is the one - and perhaps only - reason these days have felt springlike in this extended thaw. If the winds were gusty on a day like today, the sun (albeit a little stronger these days) is really no help.

Great Mid-Winter Weather

Posted by Jeremy Reiner

Nice mid-winter weather? Here's how I envision it:

*Sunshine

*Mild temps (40 or higher)

*Little to no wind

That last bullet point (IMO) is probably the biggest when outside this time of year. After our morning fog lifts out of here all three of those criteria will be met this afternoon AND.....it's Friday. #Winning.

Colder Temperatures Cometh

Posted by Pete Bouchard

As far as blah days go, this was the blahest.

Fog blanketed the area as winds remained light and variable. We're still looking at some fog, but the thickest part of it should only be during the first half of the night. After that, gentle winds should "mix out" some of the heavily fogged in areas.
